Palm Beach IT Users Group Meeting at and sponsored by: Comcast 3450 Northlake Blvd, Ste 100 09 September 2015

From the desk of PBIT Group leader, John Vighetto,
I would like to thank Matt Somach and Josh Beene for not only presenting to the group, but hosting the meeting as well. Josh explained all of Comcast's fiber-based business opportunities to the members and reviewed why this is going to be the trending solution for reliability, connectivity solution, and also why this would be the best solution from a pricing stand point.

Both Josh and Matt reviewed Comcast's partner program in great detail, providing some of the newer members valuable information.

There were great questions posed last night regarding fiber, and Josh was able to answer them easily and with great detail.

Thanks to all who showed up last night, too. Hoping it was just as informative for you as it was for me.

This month's presentation was by Adam Schwartz over Linux Desktop and Server Operating Systems.  Your current machine doesn't want to upgrade to Win 10?  Do not despair, it may run for years more on Linux.  You can also run Linux with Windows in a dual-boot or Virtual Machine status. Check out Group Leader John Vighetto's comments:

I want to thank Adam Schwartz for an excellent presentation on the Linux operating system. Adam briefly went through the history of Linux came to be, it’s components, many of the different variations/versions currently available, and went through partial installation in a virtual instance to show everyone how easy it actually is to install, setup and configure.

Due to the many questions asked and the enthusiasm of the people who attended, we will be planning a future Linux “load fest” where people can bring their laptops and either a blank CD to burn an ISO of a flavor of Linux or a USB flash drive to install a test version of Linux to boot from either the CD or flash drive. More of this to follow.

Thanks as always to Jennifer of Windstream for continuing to host our user group meetings, and from the sound of it (actually there was no sound but silence), everyone enjoyed the dinner from C.R.Chicks once again.

Thanks to everyone that attended, and to those who couldn’t attend but watch the presentation live on GoToMeeting.

If anyone in the group wishes to see a presentation on a specific topic, vendor, technology, etc., please contact me at your earliest convenience and I will try to get this lined up for one of our presentations as quickly as possible. Remember, this is not my group, it’s ours; but I need input from everyone for new topics.

Until next month, hoping everyone has a great time, make a lot of money, work smarter not harder, but most of all, have fun in what you do!

Regards,
John Vighetto
Vighetto Networking, Inc.
Also:
Thanks to John, Jennifer and Adam for an awesome evening. I had no idea how much information is out there and Adam showed how it can be compatible with any other operating system plus all the options to get this content. While the "load test" is beyond my skill set and knowledge base, it's important for me to understand what my clients and prospects are working with or considering.

Thanks to this group, many years ago I knew what a thin client was way before some of my co-workers. :)

Palm Beach IT Users Group, 15 July 2015

One of our very own, Todd Trahan of SERT Data Recovery (http://www.sertdatarecovery.com/), will be presenting to the group. He’s a local company who has already recovered a few members’ data, and he will be showing us what we can do to prevent further data corruption (or even more loss) on a damaged drive.

This month we will be meeting on Wednesday, July 15th at Windstream Communications, 7121 Fairway Drive, Suite 101, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida 33418. Meeting time is still at 6:30 pm, with the presentation starting promptly at 7:00 pm.

Please register at http://www.pbitpros.com so we can accommodate everyone for dinner. For the paid members that can’t make it but would still like to view the presentation, please contact me offline for the GoToMeeting link.

Mark your calendars, you don’t want to miss this meeting!
  --------
Comments after the meeting:
I want to thank everyone who attended last night’s presentation by Todd Trahan of SERT Data Recovery. Judging by the amount of questions that were asked and by how late we stayed, I can safely say that it was well worth everyone’s time. Todd reviewed in detail the process his company has to go through to recover data from a flash drive, hard drive or solid state drive. He also provided us helpful tips and useful guidelines to not only educate ourselves, but our clients as well. Glad we have a data recovery expert as one of our members!

Thanks to Lynne Keane for recommending to pick up dinner from C.R. Chicks, and last, but certainly not least, thanks to Jennifer for continuing to host our user group meetings at Windstream Communications.

Regards,
John Vighetto
Vighetto Networking, Inc.
-------------------
Thanks to you John as well as Jen and Todd, not to mention Dave Lord for making the trek up here to blog the events.

Todd delivered a tremendous presentation that truly educated me on the complexity of restoration and why "no one should try this at home". I learned just as much about what someone should not do to give them a better chance of restoration. It was obvious how passionate Todd is about assisting businesses in trouble.

Haven't had so much fun since Norton Utilities and Interleave tweaking!  Thanks everyone!
--------------

Viewers:  (IMHO) If you were NOT at this presentation, please read all of the slides carefully.  Some of them may make your ears burn (but I always do that....)  There was a lot of discussion on each of these points and they are well grounded.
Think about, If you bash up a couple of fenders on a car and the repair cost is almost or more than 'book' value - it is a total.  Yes, it can still be fixed.  A 'new' WD 1 t Blue currently runs at < $50.-- and a 2t is < $ 150.  Now, what is your hourly rate that you are charging.  If possible, image to a new drive before running corrective software - esp ChkDsk/ .  Also, RAID is NOT a backup.

Great presentation, Todd.  Thank You !

Palm Beach IT Users Group, 10 March 2015

Comments from the Group:
Well, for those of you who did not attend last night’s meeting, you missed a great presentation! Danielle, as always, presented the ZOHO CRM package like no other! Not only is this product easy to use (and configure), but it’s rich in features that you would have to spend a fortune on with one of its competitors like Autotask or Connectwise. For more info, please contact Danielle directly by visiting her website at http://www.kicrm.com. Do yourself the favor of starting to use this product with Danielle’s assistance, or have her migrate you off one of the other competing products and not only save money, by time and stress as well. Thank you Danielle for showcasing this for us!

I would like to also thank our host, Jennifer Cohen-Louth of Windstream Communications, for continuing to allow our group to have our meetings at her office. Thanks Jennifer!

Not only did we have a surprise visit from our user group founder, Dave O’Keefe, but he also was bearing gifts (actually, it was a huge birthday cake). Thanks for the cake Dave; it was really delicious and always great to see you!

Last, but not least, I want to thank Dave Lord for being our user group “paparazzi” or (media mogul) who constantly posts not only our meeting presentation, but the pictures on his blog as well.

Ok, now that the sugar rush from the cake is finally wearing off, I realized that I forgot to ask the people who attend last night what other type of food they would like for dinner instead of Panera’s. Please post some suggestions here so that I can mix it up for next month’s meeting. Please note: if you were not at the meeting, you can’t suggest a different choice for dinner.

With that, I would finally like to thank everyone who made the effort and showed up for Danielle’s presentation. I’m sure that no one left without learning something new.

Regards,
John Vighetto

Danielle had great presentation last night.    I looked at your website this morning, ..... but you probably already know that.    Group.....she has some serious tracking via the zoho apps!!!
Thanks, I learned alot.   Now to find time to put that into practice....

Palm Beach IT Users Group Meeting at and sponsored by: Windstream 7121 Fairway Drive, Suite 101 Palm Beach Gardens, Florida 33418 17 February 2015

From PBIT Group  Organizer, John Vighetto:
I wanted to thank everyone who made it out tonight, as well as all who shared their little “secret” with all of us. I also want to thank Jennifer for consistently hosting our meetings at Windstream Communications; thanks once again Jen.

It was good to hear from people about what they want to see at future meetings. For everyone who did not have the opportunity to participate, we want to hear from you too. Please either post back to this email or send me a private message on what vendor, technology, or new & emerging geek thing you think the group would like to see a presentation on. I’ll then be able to generate a list for us to pick from, and it would be sincerely appreciated by all.

One last thing; I’m posting a picture that Adam had a small discussion about and was entertaining (See below). Until next month, hope everyone has a great time working in IT!

Congratulatulations to  Pat for winning the external USB DVD burner, and to Robert for winning the D-Link security web camera.

Comments:
Well, for the first presentation/meeting of the year, this was the first time in a long time that everyone that registered had the opportunity to show up! Thanks to all that came out.

Brian did an excellent job of covering all of the modules of the GFI Max Service Desk, and his presentation was not only very detailed, but extremely informative. He compared GFI to other current RMM systems out there and it’s a very reasonable solution for many of the people in the group. Thanks again for the presentation Brian!

Also want to thank, as always, Jennifer of Windstream for hosting our meetings at her office. We couldn’t do it without you!

Glad to see that Kenan Klos of Klos Consulting sent one of his techs (Joseph Riling) to check out the presentation and the group.

Finally, for those of you that paid for this year’s annual membership; thank you. For those of you that didn’t, please bring your membership dues next month or you will not be allowed into the meeting. For the people that just paid for last night’s meeting: if you want to bring the balance of $180 to the next meeting you can be paid in full for the year and save yourself $40 (just saying).

Check back on our website because we will hopefully have the new site up and running very soon (I know that many of you have heard me say this the entire year last year, but it’s actually happening)! See you next month.
