Palm Beach IT Users Group Annual Holiday Party!

Notes from our Organizer:

Just wanted to thank everyone that was able to stop by at Roxy's last night. It was a great turnout, and by judging by the time we all left, it looks like everyone had fun.

Congratulations to Lynne Keane for winning the 50/50 which was a total of $63.00. As always, the other half went to our hostest Heather. She wasn't expecting it, so it was great seeing the expression on her face.

I want to thank Roxy's for hosting our 3rd user group party, and to each and everyone of you for taking the time out of your budy schedules so you could "unplug" for a little while!

Regards,
John Vighetto

Palm Beach IT Users Group 12 Nov13, Windstream, West Palm Beach, Fl

Starting with comments from PBIT Group Leader, John Vighetto:

"Well, all I can say about last night’s meeting is “wow”. Greg went through the history of the Internet, the history of search engines, and ended up speaking about how to optimize your website. It was definitely a 2--hour fact-filled night. Not only was his presentation informative, but for the people that attended, he offered to analyze their websites for free! I’m sure that we all appreciated Greg’s presentation and all the information that he provided.

I also wanted to thank Jennifer Cohen-Louth for hosting our meetings at Windstream and providing us with a meeting space.

I briefly touched on the new website that Greg has graciously volunteered to revamp for our group. I also quickly mentioned of the new annual paid registration to our group starting January 1, 2014. The annual membership cost will be $200 per member. This will be to offset the costs of the food & beverage supplied at the meetings, possible deposits for future IT superstars to present to our group, etc. More to come on this in a future email.

Please remember that we have our 3rd annual Christmas party at Roxy’s on Clematis for next month. We will start off (or actually end the year) but not having our regular meeting, but we will be having a 2-plus hour MAM (Meeting After the Meeting). More to come on this topic as well.
Once again, I’d like to thank Greg Tammany on his great presentation last night.

Linked is a broad overview of Greg's presentation.  Over the past several years I have attended probably six presentations on SEO (Search Engine Optimization).  Some from Greg, others from the Word Press group, FlaDotNet and MS.  If your business has an Internet presence of any kind,  it impacts your business.  SEO is a very dynamic area, changing almost daily.  SEO presentations may help you to keep up in this area.  Don't ever miss the opportunity to attend one.  You will always pick up  something.  Check out Greg's SITE.  See the PHOTO ESSAY of the presentation and a few screen shots.

Here was the invitation:
6:30 PM - Mobile Games with Gamemaker - James Quick - Microsoft Technical Evangelist

In this meeting we will work on designing, coding, publishing and marketing games for Windows and Windows Phone. Rapid Game Development engines allow you to leave Game Mechanics behind and focus on 'playability' aspects. During these sessions we will explore casual mobile game development using a game frameworks, GameMaker. BRING YOUR LAPTOPS - THIS WILL BE HANDS ON!!

FLASH FLASH FLASH
James will have a holiday themed (Halloween, Thanksgiving, New Year’s, and Christmas) contest or drawing for a Dell Venue Windows 8 Pro tablet. The plan is to do a drawing for the tablet for every 10 apps that gets published because of the Gamemaker workshop. That means 10 apps gets 1 tablet, 20 gets 2 and so on. May have an additional prize for best Holiday App. He asked me to spread the word about this so everyone will show up ready to work on their app. There might some change the rewards if required.

James Quick is a Microsoft Technical Evangelist working in South Florida to help developers with the latest Microsoft technologies.

------------------------------
Yes, and that's what happened !  James gave us an introduction to the Game Maker interface while we all downloaded and installed it.

From there, we all walked through the construction of a actual playable game!  Lotsa Fun !

Palm Beach IT Users Group 08 Oct 13, Windstream, West Palm Beach, Fl

Join us at our next meeting and attend Manuel Palachuk’s The 10 golden Rules of PSA. Here’s a brief description of what Manuel will be covering:
Whether you’re a one person shop or 50, you must have some guidelines of how you plan to break down the work into an organized fashion and how you will communicate with the client along the way.
You don’t have to be an MSP or use a PSA to work efficiently and be profitable but you do need a system and a method. These ten golden rules can be the seed for your own system if you have none, or you can adopt them in whole. Either way, this is your opportunity to take your service delivery to the next level. Join our guest Manuel Palachuk for this interactive conversation that starts with the unbreakable rules of the service ticket and end with communication with the client.
This meeting will be held back at Windstream Communications on 1641 Worthington Avenue, Suite 140, West Palm Beach, Florida  33409, and we’ll be meeting at our normal time of 6:30 pm. Presentation will start promptly at 7:00 pm, so please register soon so that we not only have enough seating, but enough food and drink as well.
Also in attendance will be Mr. Adam Rozenzweig of Cartridge World, who will briefly talk about his business and who will also be providing us with food and refreshments for the evening.
For everyone that will be attending, please provide a warm welcome to Ms. Jennifer Cohen-Louth, who will now be our new hostess at Windstream (don’t worry, I’m sure that Lynne will still be visiting us every once in a while).
One final item; we will start to present (and depending upon the presenter’s acceptance, will also record) future meeting presentations. Check back frequently to find out what other new and improved things will be implemented.

That was the invitation and here is the summary from our Organizer:

I want to thank everyone who attended (both physically and remotely) our meeting last night. Manny’s presentation was great and on point with what we do and how we run (or should run) our businesses.

Question for the remote attendees; how was the presentation from your end? Were you able to hear everything clearly? Please provide us with some feedback and please be brutally honest as we are trying out several products and want to use the best one based upon member feedback.

Thank you once again Manuel Palachuk for your presentation, thank you Adam from Cartridge World for your presentation and the pizza & sodas, and last but not least, thank you Jennifer for continuing to host our user group meetings at Windstream!

By the way, it was great to see Lynne Keane from that other telecom company show up last night, too!

Nova Southeastern University's FBI Special Presentation on National Cyber Security
Awareness.
Event Details: Thursday, October 3 at 6:00 p.m. Nova
Southeastern University Carl DeSantis Building, Knight
Auditorium Hall, Room 1124 3301 College Avenue Fort

No photo essay this time.  Active FBI Agents apparently remain a bit camera shy. Regardless, a great presentation on the subject matter.  Amazingly conducted without Power Point!

NSU remains one of the area's most gracious hosts in the area for this type of event.  Light snacks were very excellent, Thank You!

Also, kudo's to :

For his continued support to the IT community in South Florida.

Did you miss it?  You still have time to make the next three events this month!  See the poster above.

Coder's Cafe - Caffeine Spaces Boca - Tuesday 10/01/2013 @ 6:30 PM - Cloud Deployment Options Today - Jess Coburn - Appliedi.Net

There’s not a one size fits all cloud solution today and likely never will be one. As you look to deploy your web application, there's more than one path to the cloud. In this presentation we'll review how you can deploy many of the Azure services yourself, with the same tools, the same technology and even the same user interface but in your datacenter, on your servers and customized to your unique business needs and we’ll go over some of the advantages and disadvantages associated with that.

Also come and check out Caffeine Spaces, a collaborative workspace in the EDC Incubator at FAU in Boca.

Ok, that was the invite announcement.  Did you miss it?  check out the Photo Essay and see what happened.

Palm Beach IT Users Group 25 Sep 13 Southeastern College

Echoing PBIT Group Leader, John Vighetto's comments on this meeting:

Hello everyone,

Last night’s meeting was not our usual meeting format, but nonetheless, it was very interesting & informative. Robert Oliva (and his staff) explained what his facility is currently providing its students, as well as how they perceive what the communities needs might be for future IT graduates. Our group was shown what certifications were currently available, and not only just in Information Technology. After dinner, we were also given a tour of the facilities by Robert.

The members of our group who attended yesterday’s presentation were also handed a certificate of appreciation for accepting the position as a member for Southeastern College’s advisory board. After the presentation, several of the current students stayed and expressed their concerns of what their chances of being placed in a good job were. Our members explained to them that they not only need this school’s foundation for their training, but to also go out and see what user groups are presenting on, as well as technologies that are emerging that the user groups are gearing up for.

On behalf of our user group, I extended an invitation to these students to attend one of our meetings so that they can see what the current topics of discussion are. Hopefully, we have a new wave of techs coming to our meetings, and thus providing us with new ideas and concepts to review.

I’d like to thank Robert for hosting our meeting last night, presenting, and also providing us with dinner!

Palm Beach IT Users Group, 9 Jul 13, Storagecraft Presentation by Kevin Uttich

I'd like to start with the most appropriate comments from our group leader:

"
I want to thank everyone who stopped in to last night’s meeting. We saw some new members as well as some who have not been there for quite some time.

A special thanks to Kevin Uttich for presenting on the latest Storage Craft products and offerings. For those who attended that want to become partners, you can contact Kevin at kevin.uttich@storagecraft.com for more information.

Last, by never least, thanks to Lynne Keane for continuing to support and host our user group meetings at her Windstream office.

Finally, I will not be here the first 2 weeks of next month. I had the people who were present last night vote whether or not to have a meeting, and they all decided to skip the month of August. Therefore, there will not be an August meeting. Our next scheduled meeting will be in September.

Thanks once again to Kevin, Lynne, and to all that attended last night. Have a great rest of the week.

Deerfield Beach Coders' Cafe, 02 July, 2013

It all started with an interactive game, designed, (among other things?) to demonstrate some of the points to be made in the presentation.

Presentation by Kaushik Chokshi of COHEALO

“Is there a gap between Agile theory and practice? With ten years of practical Agile examples and some and fun exercises, let's explore the myths and reality behind this ubiquitous buzzword. We'll go through some theory (quickly) and play a game which explores the practicality of Agile concepts, and try to see if there's truth behind Yogi Berra statement that "In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is."

Speakers:

Kaushik brings over twenty years experience in software and application development having lead projects in the areas of healthcare services, e-commerce, practice management, and medical imaging. Kaushik earned a MS in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University.

A very interesting presentation with a tremendous amount of audience participation.  Check out the Photo Essay here.

PBIT Meeting, Theme: Continuum RMM & NOC presentation, by Alan Crowetz - Infostream, Inc.

A really great presentation by Alan Crowetz of InfoStream, Inc.  Most of the Charts and Reports in the linked Photo Essay are slightly blurred to protect the innocent.  If you have curiosity or questions, Alan's contact info is in the Photo Essay also - he'd really like to talk to you.

Comments from PBIT Group Leader, John Vighetto, include:

"
I want to thank everyone for joining us for Alan’s presentation. I’m sure I can safely say that his presentation was great (because he literally talked for over an hour before showing anything regarding Continuum, no one talked, no one yawned, etc.)! And as far as having everyone stay until around 9:30, it’s safe to say that all were interested (or was it because he brought donuts?)

For anyone that was on the fence about this company (present company included), Alan convinced us to become believers. His presentation was not a cheerleading session, but rather an honest and up front opinion of how he personally uses, and likes, the product.

Thanks to Danielle for bringing a home-made rum cake (it was delicious!). Last but not least, thanks to Lynne for always hosting our meetings (for as long as she has been), and an extra thanks for staying later than normal in spite of the fact that you had to leave first thing this morning for a family graduation.

Next month we will have Storage Craft talk about their latest product releases of Shadow Protect. Hope to see you there. Have a great rest of the week!

And further comments from Presenter,  Alan Crowetz:

"
Very much appreciate everyone’s feedback and questions.  Great stuff.

If anyone has any questions or wants more information, feel free to reach out to me anytime at alan@infostream.cc

Also, if you are thinking about signing up, I can pass your information along if you are ok with sending me your contact details including name, firm, website, phone and address.  They have a referral form I can fill out to get you a free demo to tinker with.

Really appreciated the lively debate!"

Palm Beach IT Users Group (PBIT) meeting, 14 May 13

This months' presentation was by Max Trinidad, MVP / Powershell Guru, on Powershell.  Comments from our (PBIT) group leader included:

"On behalf of the Palm Beach IT users group, I would like to thank Max Trinidad for his great presentation last night. Max's passion for working with PowerShell definitely showed, and I'm pretty sure that the people that were there last night have not only a better understanding of the possibilities with PowerShell, but were also convinced to explore the possibilities of using PowerShell within their own environment (as well as their client's offices).

I'd also like to thank Max for the great giveaways that were handed out. Congratulations to all the winners!

Max mentioned to me that he would like to visit our group in the near future. So, if you have a particular topic, or topics, that you would like for Max to review, please let me know and we can schedule Max to stop in. Once again, thank you Max for a great presentation!

It was great to see some new faces/members, as well as some members that have not been to a meeting for a few months.

Next month we will will have one of our very own, Alan Crowetz, presenting on Continuum (formerly known as Zenith Infotech) and how you can use this product to grow your current IT business.

Last, but never least, I'd like to thank Lynne for continuing to provide us with our meeting space within the Windstream offices. Please remember to provide Lynne with any leads that you may have so that we can try to assist her with her goals.

Finally (and you thought this email was long enough!), our MAM (Meeting After the Meeting) was entertaining and informative.

See everyone next month!"

PBIT Meeting, 12 Feb 13

This month's presentation was about Exotic Signs and how to use wraps to enhance your marketing image.  Check out the 'wrapped' products in thee picture above.

Danielle Major had a front-row seat at this presentation.  These were her spontaneous remarks:

I also wanted to say that I was blown away by the presentation... The vast array of items that got private labelled was impressive.  The artwork was equally impressive and the quality was beyond expectations.
It was really nice to have a tactile presentation for a change.  Thank you both for taking the time and effort to bring all of those items in for us to pass around... you must have been cringing when you saw John walk in with Wings!!
Lynne, thank you for putting up with us and staying late to give us a place to congregate and plan our world domination.
John, as always, thank you for coordinating everything and being the Ringmaster.

And Eyas and Paul Jordan...  a great big huge thank you for your time and efforts...  very impressive, gentlemen!

Have a fabulous Wednesday and hope to see everyone next month!

Palm Beach IT Group meeting, 8 Jan 13

John Vighetto wrote a great summary of this meeting.  I quote it here:

"
I wanted to thank Blain Barton for presenting to the group on Windows 2012 as well as Hyper-V within Server 2012. In spite of the poor phone connection we had with Blain and the issue of not being able to connect via Microsoft's Lync service, I believe that everyone had a few informative things to take away from this presentation.

For anyone wanting to receive Blain's newsletter, just send him a blank email with the words "add me" in the subject line. His email is blainbar@microsoft.com.

For anyone interested in keeping up to date with new presentations in the area, check out the following link (http://itprocamp.com/).

While Blain was presenting, I sent out a link for his blog. I the event that you missed that email, here it is once again (http://blogs.technet.com/b/blainbar/).

I also want to thank Lynne Keane of Windstream Communications for always hosting our meetings. She has been hosting them for almost 7 years now. Thanks Lynne!

I will prepare a survey based upon the questions that I had regarding how to keep the interest within the group with regards to presenters and other topics. If use this post, please take some time to answer honestly, as it will show in which direction the group is to go in.

Thanks to all that came out. We saw a few familiar faces that we haven't seen in some time. Enjoy the rest of your week.
